How to give your pet an insulin injection
Most pets tolerate insulin injections well once you establish a routine. Use a fresh needle each time, inject into the scruff or flank, and stay calm — your pet takes their cue from you. Always use the dose your vet prescribed.
Step 1 — Prepare your equipment
Gather insulin pen or syringe, fresh needle and a treat. Roll cloudy insulin gently (e.g. Caninsulin), never shake. Confirm the dose matches your vet's prescription.
Step 2 — Choose your injection site
The scruff (loose skin at the back of the neck) suits most pets. The flank is a good alternative. Rotate sites to prevent lumps.
Step 3 — Prepare the site
No need to clean with alcohol — it stings and is unnecessary for home injections. Part the fur with your fingers.
Step 4 — Lift the skin
Pinch a fold of loose skin between thumb and forefinger. You are targeting the subcutaneous layer, not muscle.
Step 5 — Insert the needle
Insert at 45 degrees in one smooth, confident motion. Hesitation makes it harder for both of you.
Step 6 — Inject the insulin
Press the plunger slowly and steadily. Resistance means you may be in muscle — withdraw and try again.
Step 7 — Withdraw and reward
Remove the needle cleanly. Give the treat immediately. Dispose of the needle in your sharps bin.
