About Mello — Our Story

What I remember most isn't the diagnosis itself. It's watching the person I love try to carry it.

Overnight, my partner became responsible for keeping Max well with a routine she'd never done before — injections twice a day, at the right times, with meals timed around them, and readings to keep track of. And with that responsibility came a constant, low hum of worry that never really switched off.

Was she injecting correctly? Did the full dose go in, or did some end up on his fur? Had she missed something the vet said? Was that wobble a sign of a hypo, or was he just tired? Every vet appointment brought a barrage of questions she felt she should have the answers to — how had his readings been, how was his appetite, any changes — and the honest answer was too often scribbled on scraps of paper, half-remembered, or lost.

And underneath all of it, the thing that quietly hurts the most: the guilt. The sense that she should somehow have caught it sooner. That if she just tried harder, worried more, she could keep him safe. Any pet parent who has been through a chronic diagnosis knows exactly this feeling — and knows how heavy it is to carry alone.

She was doing everything right. She just had no calm, clear system to lean on — and no sense that anyone else understood what those first frightening weeks feel like.

Watching that is what started Mello.

I kept thinking: this shouldn't be so hard. The information a vet needs is simple and consistent — readings, doses, meals, changes — and yet owners are left to hold it all in their heads, or on scraps of paper, at exactly the moment they're most stressed and least able to. There had to be a better way to take the daily guesswork out of it, so the worry could go back to being about the dog you love, not about whether you're getting the admin right.

So we set out to build the thing we wished we'd had for Max: a calm, simple way to log the day, spot the patterns, and turn it all into something you can hand straight to your vet — so appointments become a conversation instead of an interrogation, and so you can go to bed knowing you've done what you can.

Here's the thing we feel most strongly about: we don't think we have all the answers.

Mello is built by pet parents who've been exactly where you are — but every diabetic dog and cat is different, and every owner learns something the rest of us could benefit from. So we're building this as a community, not a finished product handed down from on high. We genuinely want your input: what's hard, what's missing, what would actually help. Every piece of feedback makes Mello better for the next frightened owner who's just heard the word "diabetes" and doesn't know where to turn.

Because that's the whole point. Not an app for its own sake — but helping pet parents and their furbabies live the long, happy, ordinary lives they deserve. The kind of life Max had — full of walks, and kids, and mess, and love — right to the very end. He's the reason Mello exists, and he's behind everything we build.
